Five Local Bands You Should Be Listening To
do512blog.com/2014/08/20/five-local-bands-you-should-be-listening-to/

"Strong showing here from an Austin band that’s been around for the past two years, putting a few recognizable signifiers – mainly a straightforward post-punk drum cadence – on an inspired sprint through humid garage-like chug, dark/Gothic rock, diary pop. On “Whatcha Do,” the four women of Suspirians shift a number of moves up the tree (L7-style tuff gnarl, a moment of introspection, and a 5th gear blast out of town into the horizon), bound with interesting synth work and bales of guitar noise, creating something in the vicinity of rock music that’s going in its own direction. A rare instance where image and substance join in a lurid, downstroked display of power. Looking forward to whatever happens next."

"The difference between hearing a song and experiencing it distinguishes good bands from great ones. Suspirians' eponymous debut delivers the goods with feeling. The local quartet's disjointed guitars and vocal sass of frontwoman Marisa Pool recall impassioned Nineties femme punks Heavens to Betsy and Bratmobile, the seven-song long-player blending raucous rock inspiration with crisp Sixties surf-pop. Standout "In My Time" flexes Pool's bratty style and clean licks, which slowly crescendo into an eventual noise frenzy. Raw and DIY, but with intent, Suspirians will ideally serve as the foundation on which the group fortifies its uniqueness by bridging the gap between musical influences and budding aesthetic. Some might consider this debut's rudimentary bareness amateurish, but that camp never understood the appeal of bands like Pavement, a group that, like Suspirians, proved great feeling can flourish in music despite its creators' air of apathy and/or lack of technical precision."

Suspirians’ self-titled album is one of the most impressive debut releases to come out of the local Austin scene this year. In just seven tracks, Suspirians covers a wide range of styles from post-punk to psychedelic, garage and even noise rock. It is a very successful first offering and a great representation of the eclectic local punk scene forming in Austin right now.

Suspirians Austin, Texas

Rock music, when done right, will always take us into a netherworld that we never knew existed, but we always somehow felt was within ourselves. The cosmos of inescapable rhythm, in-your-face melody and words, all speak simple truths that perhaps we couldn’t speak for ourselves. Austin, TX trio Suspirians summons that netherworld with their sophomore album Ti Bon Ange. ... more
